Made-in-India Apple iPhone coming soon?
Rumor has it that Foxconn, a manufacturing partner of Apple, has its eyes currently set on India as the next location to house iPhone assembly plants. The company has been vocal about plans to put up a number of facilities in India in the next 5 years. Foxconn officials, however, are mum when it comes to any Apple plant specifics.
Through the years, Foxconn has established a significant business presence in China and expanded to other countries where they sense promising markets in recent years. In South America, Foxconn found a home for the iPhone in Brazil in 2011, but prospects didn’t really take off the way they projected.
If Foxconn’s idea of settling the iPhone in India materializes, there is great potential for prices to go lower, at the same time effecting a boost in growing market sales. This could pave the way for the implementation of Foxconn’s other plans that include building iPods and iPads in India as well. Getting their acts going in India would allow Apple and Foxconn to offset skyrocketing wages in China. The manufacturing partners can then compete more aggressively pricing-wise against other giants in the Indian market like Samsung and Micromax (a local company).
There is great promise in this, so we’ll definitely keep an eye on further developments.
