Meizu sold nearly 3 million devices in August 2015
Yesterday saw the grand unveiling of Meizu’s latest flagship device, Meizu Pro 5. While it was clear that the Chinese OEM still maintains possession of its most important value — tossing quality components and high end specs into affordable devices — the brand’s inferiority complex towards western products was still visible and glaring. The Pro 5, no matter how good it performed, still reminds you of an Apple iPhone whenever you see one.
Although we are not here to judge (we’ll leave that for the Reviews Section), it will be underwhelming to not mention Meizu’s incessant slavish following of the iPhone. From our own sincer point of view, the firm has got what it takes to become the next Huawei or Oppo if their designers can discontinue the idolization of the Apple iPhone.
The Meizu Pro 5 was strongly built with a magnesium alloy body which houses a 5.7″ 1080p Super AMOLED display and an Exynos 7420 chipset: the same processor that powered the Samsung Galaxy Note 5. The smartphone also has a fingerprint sensor and comes with a 21-megapixel Sony camera as well as an adequate 5-megapixel selfie camera up front.
During the heat of announcements yesterday, CEO Jack Wong chipped in that Meizu sold 2.89 million smartphones worldwide last month. The figure looks rosy compared to the total 8.9 million units the company was able in the first six months 2015
Now that Meizu is experiencing a somewhat steady sales growth, it will be interesting to see how the company repositions itself in the next coming months. In the near future, many fans will like to see the company take a strategic position as a Samsung and or Apple challenger and not as an iPhone wannabe. Word on the street is that it wouldn’t hurt a bit if Meizu can try its hands on a new product line with unique designs now that the company has gotten global recognition.
