Middle East: Tablet market tumbles, Lenovos surpass iPads
The strong presence of smartphones with big displays aka “phablets” is causing chaos for tablet producers in several markets.
For the first time since four years, tablet sales dipped in the Middle East, shedding 5.83 per cent to 3.83 million shipments in 2015 Q1 against 4.07 million units hailed in the first three months of 2014.
“Currency fluctuations in Turkey, high inventory levels carried over from [the last three months of 2014], and some saturation in the tablet market also had a negative impact on shipments targeted at the consumer segment,” explained a statement from IDC.
The research firm also pointed out increasing sales of phablets to have “eaten” up the market of tablets: “The 7-inch tablets, in particular, have been eaten up by bigger screen phones” chief operating officer Ashish Panjabi said.
During the foremost quarter of this year, Lenovo shipped more tablets than Apple at the rate of 520,000 units to Apple’s 430,000 iPads. The deficit on global oil prices had an indirect impact on customers preference to costlier tablets as Samsung remained the market leader, with Lenovo and Apple coming second and third, the report says.
