New Xiaomi Mi 5 rumors suggest Ultrasound fingerprint reader, Snapdragon 820 SoC
Just like the English translation of it’s name — “little millet”– Xiaomi is no longer the small OEM tucked in somewhere in far away China making phone after phone, hoping one will catch the hook. Over the years, the once unknown millet has joined the ranks of Apple and Samsung as one of the most popular phone vendors in the world.
So when Xiaomi is about to release a flagship (or even any product at all), the media is always awash with rumors and gossip about what is going to be expected. Such is the case of the company’s upcoming Xiaomi Mi 5 which is just the subject of talk today.
According to reports from China, Xiaomi is rooting for a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 chipset for their next flagship. Despite a pact with Chinese semiconductor company, Leadcore, which could see special-request, custom Leadcore processors ticking inside future Mi phones, Xiaomi was said to have chosen Qualcomm this one more time. The Mi 5 will carry a whopping 4GB of RAM and there will be two storage options: 16GB and 64GB.
Last time, we heard the unreleased Xiaomi flagship will be packing a fingerprint sensor but the latest reports brought more details of the scanner. Xiaomi is reportedly going to use ultrasound sensors for the fingerprint hardware instead of the mainstream optical reader which is said to be less accurate in presence of moisture and particles.
Nothing was said about the photo taker on the phone but last time we heard Xiaomi was going to use a 16-megapixel optical image stabilized camera with a secondary 8MP front-facing selfie taker. The Xiaomi Mi 5 is expected to be announced in the second half of the year.
