Samsung Galaxy S6 Review — All Metal
When it comes to smartphones, Samsung has established itself as one of the key players in the market. If Android platform’s success is talked about, then Samsung has a big hand in making it stand face to face with quality OS like the iOS. Samsung’s Galaxy S series of flagship phones delivered something for everyone which is why it has been one of the best series in the market till date. However, when the Galaxy S4 came out, it could not impress Samsung lovers to that extent. While the specs were still decent in the phone, it was not that impressive on the looks.
- 5.1 inch Super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen display, 16 M colours
- 1.5GHz quad-core Cortex-A53 and 2.1GHz quad-core Cortex-A57 CPU
- 3 GB of RAM
- 32/64/128 GB in-built storage, no expansion slot
- 16 MP primary camera with autofocus
- 5 MP front camera
- 2G/ 3G/4G network support
- Bluetooth, GPS and Wi-Fi
- 2550mAh battery
- Android version 5.0.2 (Lollipop).
Later came the Galaxy S5, for which fans had high hopes. However, that too didn’t stand out among the crowd to deliver something dynamic and approachable. But, with launch of the Samsung Galaxy S6, the company has rectified its previous mistakes by bringing a phone that is not only spectacular on the specs, but also the sexy body it possesses. The first impressions for the phone have lured in all types of customers to take a look at this masterpiece. But, does the phone really is something worth buying? Does it make Samsung revamp the sales for the phone which had been snatched by its competitors the previous year? This all can be judged through this detailed review explaining whether this phone has what it takes to be the Alpha Wolf in the world of smartphones.
Beauty at its best is what Samsung has come up with in their new yet unofficial motto. That would certainly be a major plus point for the company with the launch of the S6.
Externals: Design and Display:
Perhaps the most intriguing feature for the phone is its design. As said earlier, the revamp in the design and looks have made this smartphone deliver something promising this year. The S6 has a Gorilla Glass 4 on the front of the screen as well as on the back – making it crystal clear to hold in the hand. This might be a little slippery for some for which a cover might be suggested. The colour variants offered in this phone are – Black Sapphire, White Pearl, Blue Topaz and Gold Platinum.
On top of that, the screen is said to be the sharpest among all other similar rage phones. A remarkable 1440 by 250 pixels (~577 ppi density) have been provided which is worth commending. Plus, Samsung’s QHD display makes it all even crispier with least power consumption. A screen size of 5.1 inch makes it deliver just the right size in the hands for your hours of high aspect ratio layouts. This makes it the perfect device for watching your favourite videos or playing games.
The screen is said to leave behind even Note 4’s, which was until now known to be the best. However, even with their Super AMOLED technology for least power consumption, there might be chances to frequently charge the phone as power might be used. TouchWiz, the usual interface offered by Samsung, is unfortunately still there. But, it has improved in most areas than the previous versions. While it still gives that immature looks like in the S4. But changing of the menu styles and the removal of redundant dialogue boxes have made it more comfortable and impressive to use. No more double checking with those irritating dialogue boxes is now what you get in the S6. Overall, the display has been offered a simple yet enticing new look which will keep the customers happy.
Internals: Hardware and Software:
This would perhaps be the section which all geeks and phone lovers want to know about. Well, then get ready to be blown away. S6 has been offered with Android v5.0.2 (Lollipop) with a QHD display that powers a 64-bit Octa core processor chip (Exynos 7420). Besides that, you get Quad-core 1.5 GHz Cortex-A53 and Quad-core 2.1 GHz Cortex-A57. A MALI-T760MP8 GPU has also been provided. The chip is supported with 3 GB RAM andstorage options of 32 GB, 64 GB and 128GB. Moreover, Samsung claims that the new chipset used is capable of improving the performance of the processor by 40%. The claim is quite bold but perhaps the improvement in their chips this year might offer such performance ratio.
A fingerprint sensor has also been provided just like the S5 but is far better quality. It opens the phone quite decently without any troubles. With this technology, phone security has certainly been remodelled for better protection. Besides that, a variety of payment options have also been added to the phone like the iPhone 6. You get a magnetic strip based payment option, NFC payment as well as the usual barcode options. This definitely makes the phone really well-versed with the right tools and software for daily usage.
If the battery is considered then the phone still might not have a bigger battery which is just 2550mAh, even less than the S5 – which had 2800mAh. Perhaps the slim size made the manufacturers lower the batter power. But, their claim to have a better performance and low power consumption might make the batter power be neglected by the users. Samsung’s processor chip has also been upgraded which might make it easier to keep up the power while using the phone. On top of that, a wireless disc charger accompanied with the phone is said to charge the phone pretty fast. This could make it easier to keep the phone charge. But, long-term diagnosis might still not be clear for now.
A negative point might be that it does not have an expandable memory slot as well as a removable battery. But, a non-removable battery still can be worked with. Besides all this, the phone also offer ultra-power saving modes to help keep the battery going on for hours, though you won’t be able to use other key features of the phone such as the internet.
Camera and Connectivity
The Samsung Galaxy S6 powers a 16 MP primary camera, an f1.9 aperture. The camera has been said to be 34% more capable in low light imagery than the S5. The camera does pack the usual S5 camera effects and tricks like auto HDR, automated tracking and optical image stabilization. This effect cannot only detect human faces but also help focus on other living and non-living things for razor sharp pictures. Moreover, the camera can be accessed through the home button by double tapping it. You can instantly access the camera for quick photo-shooting. Samsung claims that it will hardly take 0.7 seconds to access it. Now that’s fast.
Besides that, it comes with a 5 MP front camera supported by a sensor to offer really high-quality low light images. Even the clicks have been sped up in this new phone, so you can click some awesome pictures within milliseconds. HDR mode which delivers high- dynamic range mode is also supported in the front cam. So, the front camera has been developed specifically for the ones who love taking selfies on the go.
Just like HTC and iPhone, Samsung too has come up with the slow motion video app in its camera. Now one can record slow motion videos at as low as 240 fps which are quite smooth to look at. But, Samsung isn’t just copying the old slow motion video technology like the other phones. The slow motion video app in this phone can be used at different speed modes. Means that you would be able to change the slow motion speeds as per your likings. Make it really slow or adjust the speed as per your likings. Record lightning bolts or shoot a friend jumping from a height, the creations have no limit if you don’t either.
For connectivity, you get Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac with Wi-Fi Direct dual band and hotspot. The Bluetooth version offered is v4.1 with A2DP and LE. Besides that, you also get apt-X. GPS, infrared port, NFC, GLONASS, and Beidou are also provided. You also get a variety of sensors such as – gyro, proximity, barometer, compass, SpO2, accelerometer and heart rate monitor.
The Galaxy S6 does come up with a bang in the market, making all its competitors be prepared with the sales charts for this year. Even the ones who despised this South Korean company have looked up to check out this brand new phone in the market. And why not? – After all the new looks and specs are too good to be true. And, once they get their hands on this new phone, they are very much pleased with what they get. The S6 has become so popular these days that even limited edition phones for this model have been launched – the most recent being the Iron Man Galaxy S6 version. It surely has been a big hit among the diehard fans of the series.
The most depressing con would perhaps be the small battery which is even smaller compared to the HTC One M9. HTC phones had always been criticized for their bad battery backup. But, Samsung has given their brand new flagship device even a smaller battery. But, their claims to offer improved power consumption and performance are yet to be witnessed in this phone. Overall, the phone is quite remarkable and a must have if it is in your budget, of course. You can get the phone around 700 USD from the Nigerian market.
