What are 14,000 Pirates Doing In Penzance?
There was recently an attempt to break the world record and get into Guinness World Record. The record they were trying to break was The Pirate World Record. Yes, there really is such a record (I wonder if we owe it to Captain Jack Sparrow for making pirates popular).
The event was organized in a small town of Penzance by the Town Council. But sadly they weren’t able to break the record and cross out Hastings, East Sussex, the town holding this record right now (there seems to be some rivalry going on between these two).
Hastings got their name in the Guinness World Record back in 2010 with 6.166 pirates, but Penzance managed to beat that record in 2011 with 8.734 pirates making trouble around town. But Hastings wouldn’t take that and they organized another event in 2012 where they managed to gather 14.231. Penzance tried to steal the record again but they were 77 people short of doing so.
The new elected mayor of Penzance claims that it was a waste of money. Apparently, Town Council spent more than it was planned on the Pirate gathering event. They spent £56.000. The money was spent on pirate-themed bands, T-shirts, £300 on inflatable parrots (but some came whit their real ones, saved some bucks) and £4.500 for the team from the Guinness Book of Records, health and safety costs totaled £8,000 and a coordinator was paid £5,000 to make the day unforgettable.
