What Google Project Ara? Here’s Fairphone 2: A phone with swappable parts
You might have heard of Google’s Project Ara. It’s program aimed to produce devices that won’t require you to upgrade your smartphone every time a new model comes out each year when you want to stay trendy.
Project Ara is designed/being designed to give you a handset where all or most of the parts are changeable to suit your current needs. Say you want a 6-inch display with Quad HD resolution instead of the 5″ 1080 one that you are currently using — you just swap out the affected parts and replace them with the ones you want. Simple.
So, while we are still waiting for Google and Project Ara, a Holland-based company seems to have delivered us to the promised land via a program started out as far back as 2013, leaning on crowd funds for finance.
There you go fellas. Today, the Fairphone 2 was launched. Running on Android 5.1 Lollipop and coming with dynamic parts that could be swapped out before you can say Jack, the Fairphone 2 houses a 5-inch 1080p display, 2GB of RAM, a Snapdragon 810 chipset, an 8MP camera and 2 SIM slots. Like we already mentioned, everything can be upgraded within the twinkle of an eye (watch the video at the end of the post to see how).
Pricing and avialability
Fairphone 2 will hit the shelves in Europe in September, attracting a handsome price of €525 from enthusiastic users who’d love to have a taste of
building a PC from scratch having a mobile with swappable parts.
Now, before you procrastinate, just remember the first Fairphone, priced €325, sold out its available 60,000 copies in a heartbeat earlier this year. The second generation isn’t expected to lie around in the show glass either.
