Apple’s Tim Cook has spoken about his company’s new found love for payments, Apple Pay. This is the the first time the CEO is talking about Apple Pay since the payment service was released a week ago from today.
Cook said that Apple Pay has gathered massive success as over a million activations had been gathered from the one week experience. “We’re already No. 1. We’re more than the total of the other guys, and we’ve only been at it a week.” the Apple chief executive boasted.
Tim Cook further lashed out to retailers who were blocking Pay from their stores in favor of a new system created by a retailers union that is prepping to launch sometime this year. Wal-Mart and Best Buy were joined by drugstore chains CVS Caremark Corp. and Rite Aid Corp. in the list of offline retailers who accepted, but later rejected Apple Pay.
“It’s a skirmish,” Cook said. “Merchants have different objectives sometimes. But in the long arc of time, you only are relevant as a retailer or merchant if your customers love you.” Tim Cook even went further to boast that “We’ve got a lot more merchants to sign up, we’ve got a lot of banks to sign up and we’ve got the rest of the world.”
