Cubot X9 review — Fine China

China is sure, no doubt, an industry where many great things come out. The country is known for affordable — sometimes unbelievably cheap products — and as you know, cheapness is often accompanied with poor quality. So today, we have on our hot sit, Cubot’s new X9 machine which we are going to dig into to find out whether it’s a good buy or not even at its budget-friendly pricing.
With that being said, let’s take a look at how the Cubot X9 stacks up in properties.

Display

Cubot X9 screen
On the X9, what you are going to find is an IPS panel that measures 5 inches diagonal. This touchscreen has a depth of 720 x 1280 (HD) pixels resolution and 293.72 PPI. By mere looking at the images, you’ll find out that pictures rendered on the device’s screen are not grainy and the touchscreen is quite promising and looks responsive.

Design

Call it an iPhone 6 clone or whatever, the Cubot X9 has an amazing flat design even though we cannot take away the fact that it looks much (not too much) like the Apple flagship. The smartphone is pretty slim at 6.9 millimeters and with 124 grams weight (with battery), it’s one of the lightest 5″ phones you’ll find in the market.

Cubot X9 aluminum
The aluminum panel of the phone feels uber comfortable while holding it and even though more could have been done about the side and top bezels, the X9 still measures pretty smaller than average (143.5 x 72.5) of 5″ smartphones. The stereo speakers were positioned under the phone — just where an Apple iPhone 6 would have it.

Camera

Cubot X9 camera
With a 13-megapixel Sony CMOS camera that has face and smile detection, HDR, Geo-tagging, autofocus and panorama mode, what more could a ‘photographer’ ask of a sub-$200 device? The 8MP secondary camera of the phone is even more than adequate for your selfie and groupie needs. The back/main camera is equipped with a powerful LED flash which can double as a torchlight and of course, a camera light.

Internals

This phone is powered by MediaTek’s MT6592M System-on chip. This processor has a Cortex-A7 CPU with eight cores running at 1.4GHz which makes operation buttery smooth for this Cubot device.

To make things more interesting, the X9 is equipped with 2GB of RAM while the ROM is pegged at 16GB. As you may have expected, the 16GB is not entirely available for the user but still no qualms, there’s still a microSD card slot which could hold up to a 64GB memory card on the phone.

In terms of software, the Cubot X9 uses one of the latest versions of Google’s mobile software, Android 4.4 KitKat operating system. Needless to say, KitKat is one sweet experience, coming with maximum battery effectiveness, customizable user interface and support for over 1 million apps on Google Play.

Battery

Even though the device’s battery is not user-removable (big disadvantage for quick battery juice via swapping of battery), the 2200mAh capacity is just OK regarding the smartphone’s power requirements. However, Cubot seems to have sacrificed a small additional battery juice which could have caused more bulkiness for the super slimness of the phone.
