Flip phones taking over in Japan once again

Back in the early 2000's, smartphones used to be hip.

Japan is a country where you find many weird stuff, but wait until you see the latest development in the Asian country. According to Reuters, sales of flip phones oddly increase in the region for the first time in 7 years. This was due to surging trend in “Galapagos” phones (that’s what they call flip phones in Japan), thus the increased demand.

As shocking as it sounds, smartphones fell 5.3 percent to 27.70 million units sold in 2014 while flip phones increased with almost the same velocity at 5.7 percent to reach 10.58 million sold devices in 2014.

“Smartphones are also peaking in terms of functionality and they tend to last a long time as well, so there are fewer renewals,” MM Research Executive Analyst Hideaki Yokota.
