Fans who were expecting something wearable at HTC’s Double Exposure event today will surely be disappointed by this announcement. Though the event is to kick off in a few hours time, HTC has said no smartwatch should be expected at the occasion, and even throughout the whole of this year.
The company highlighted it’s interest in the smartwatch business, but says lack of demand for the category has discouraged it from whipping out it’s own products. “We’ve seen a lot of general purpose wearables come to market,” HTC Americas president Jason Mackenzie told Re/code.
“There’s not a strong reason to wear one every day. When we come to market with our product we want to make sure the product has a strong point of view and there is a really compelling reason to strap it on your wrist.” he continued.
“We had originally planned to have a wearable launch in this time frame, it ended up just not being ready,” Mackenzie said. When asked if HTC will still make a smartwatch this year, the answer was not clear but the top official said his company is looking forward to next year.
Back in August, @evleaks (o, we miss you, evleaks!) tweeted an alleged picture of a HTC smartwatch prototype which the leakstar said was going to be powered by Android Wear OS.
